INTRODUCTIONThere is now a concerted effort by the Left to once and for all destroy the Right in this country through a judicial process not unsimilar to the one it used against Nixon almost thirty-five years ago; an effort that - while it destroyed Nixon - was unable to finish the Right off, which rallied after Carter and succeeded in regaining power with the so-called "Reagan Revolution" (which wasn't really a "revolution," but a "counter-revolution"). The Left hopes to begin this process by calling on Congress to appoint a Special Prosecutor to investigate and prosecute high Bush officials for "war crimes;" the initial targets of the investigation appear to be lawyers John Yoo, Jay Bybee, David Addington and William Haynes for "counseling the White House on how to get away with war crimes;" specifically torturing terror suspects to get information. The hope here is to successfully prosecute these four, and from there - as evidence is accumulated - to work their way up through the entire right-wing matrix until they get to Bush and Cheney, a process not unlike the one prosecutors use against Mafioso dons.
A FIGHT TO THE FINISHThe truth of the matter is, the Left is in a titanic struggle with the Right, and only one of the two will walk away from the fight. Each side to the struggle understands itself, and is understood by its antagonist, as standing for a world-view that cannot be compromised - AND EACH SIDE IS "PLAYING FOR KEEPS."
And make no mistake about it: that's exactly what it was - an assassination attempt; and almost everyone knew it at the time, though no one wanted to admit it. Columnist Jerry White of WSR was one of the few commentators to report on what people were really thinking behind closed doors:
White continued:
White went on to say:
Shortly after the anthrax attacks on Leahy and Daschle, additional anthrax attacks were launched against Democratic Senators Ted Kennedy and Christopher Dodd, after which columnist Anthony York of the McClatchy News Syndicate wrote a piece in the Sacramento Bee pretty much echoing what Jerry White had written; like White, York seemed perplexed as to why the mainline media didn't react to the "OBVIOUS:"

The Church Committee: Investigating CIA and FBI covert activity against U.S. citizens. Frank Church can be seen in the picture to the rt. holding a pistol used in a "CIA hit." |
NOTE #2: Everyone has by now heard of the Watergate Hearings and Iran / Contra; but not so much the Church Committee. The Church Committee is the common term referring to the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee chaired by Senator Frank Church (D-ID) in 1975. A precursor to the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, the committee investigated intelligence gathering for illegality by the CIA and FBI after certain activities had been revealed by the Watergate affair. The Democratic Congress was determined to rein in the CIA, the FBI and military intelligence, and to ascertain the extent to which these agencies had been involved in questionable, if not outright illegal, activities. A series of troubling revelations started to appear in the press concerning intelligence activities. First came the revelations of Christopher Pyle in January 1970 of the U.S. Army's spying on the civilian population and Sam Ervin's Senate investigations that resulted. The dam broke on 22 December 1974, when The New York Times published a lengthy article by Seymour Hersh detailing operations engaged in by the CIA over the years that had been dubbed the "family jewels." Covert action programs involving assassinations were also reported for the first time. In addition, the article discussed efforts by intelligence agencies to collect information on the political activities of US citizens.

Nevertheless, "if truth be known," the U.S. has been in the business of torturing its prisoners through proxies for years and years now. Americans: Ignoring what happened |
"Last year [2007] I argued that it's unlikely any top Bush administration official would be prosecuted for war crimes in the US. This is because America is an amnesiac nation. We hate facing hard truths about ourselves. We prefer to make a brief nod to whatever horrible disaster we've collectively enabled, move on and then never think of it. (At least until it happens again.) It seemed logical that this same attitude would apply to the torture regime created under George Bush, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld ...
"But now things are changing. THE TORTURE ISSUE MAY TURN OUT TO BE TOO BIG TO IGNORE." [That is, if the Democrats have any thing to say about it.]
NOTE: John McQuaid is a liberal journalist specializing in science, environment, and various forms of "government dysfunction." His work has appeared in the Washington Post, Slate, U.S. News, Wired, and Mother Jones, among other publications. He is also the co-author, with Mark Schleifstein, of Path of Destruction: The Devastation of New Orleans and the Coming Age of Superstorms.
According to McQuaid, one sign of the shift towards prosecuting Bush et. al. was Bob Woodward's December, 2008, Washington Post story in which a Bush Administration official took the groundbreaking step of calling torture "torture" - meaning "water-boarding."
McQuaid said at the time that more such "admissions" of torture were bound to surface now that Bush wasn't going to be around to enforce silence on his subalterns.
McQuaid wrote:
"The Bush White House is about to disappear. It can no longer wield the political or institutional clout necessary to enforce a strict code of silence. Meanwhile, there are certain advantages to coming clean, and as time goes by they will grow more compelling. Some lower-level officials in the Bush-era Pentagon, justice department and intelligence agencies will want to clear their consciences and be on the right side of history. Some will want to go on the record to secure legal protections from prosecution."

Waterboarding has been around for many years; it was practiced by intelligence officers in Vietnam on a routine basis - despite the caption that appears on the photo. |
Needless
to say, the developing effort by the Left to prosecute Bush,
et. al. for war crimes has struck a certain amount
of TERROR in the Right, and that terror was heightened
by Obama's choice for Attorney General: ERIC HOLDER;
it was a signal that the Obama Administration - despite its
denials to the contrary - was on track to "go after Bush" and
his cronies ala Watergate before the chance slipped out
of their hands. IF THEY FAILED NOW, THE NEO-CONS AND THE
RIGHT WOULDN'T GIVE THEM A SECOND CHANCE ONCE THINGS TURNED
AROUND! THE ATTEMPTED MURDERS OF LEAHY, DASHLE, KENNEDY AND
DODD BY EXTREME ELEMENTS ON THE RIGHT HAD, AS IT WERE, PUT
THE "FEAR OF GOD" IN THE LEFT - and that fear was impelling
them forward on their witch-hunt.
And there should be no mistake insofar as Holder's leftish proclivities (and, ipso facto, his penchant to pursue the Right "until hell freezes over"): His actions over the years give testimony to his left-wing proclivities; for example, Holder was instrumental as Deputy Attorney General for pardoning such left-wing radicals (and heroes of the Left) as former Weather Underground members Susan Rosenberg (who was involved in the deadly 1981 armed robbery of a Brink's armored car) and Linda Evans (who had used false identification to buy firearms, harbored a fugitive, and was in possession of 740 pounds of dynamite at the time of her arrest in 1985).

| Before the November election, Eric Holder was among the prominent Democrats who denounced the Bush administration. He has been accused of blatantly "politicizing" the Justice Department - the very thing Democrats accused the Bush Administration of doing. |
Very obviously, the Left knew that they could count on Holder to make the "evidence" against the Right conveniently appear on a painful drip-by-drip basis.
And it wasn't just his left-wing "proclivities" that gave the Left confidence that Holder would pursue Bush et. al. for war crimes. He said so! McQuaid continued:
"Eric Holder, Obama's nominee for attorney general, told senators at his confirmation hearing last week [again, December 2008] that waterboarding is torture. It doesn't take a logician to see the implications: If waterboarding is torture, and torture is illegal, then the waterboarding done by US interrogators must be illegal.
"Meanwhile, frank accounts of torture [will continue to surface], coming from inside the system itself. This will make it impossible to ignore the likelihood that criminal acts occurred. Ambitious [liberal] prosecutors will see terrible crimes just sitting out there in plain sight, and they will look to make their careers by taking aim at high officials. The media and the politicians will sit up and pay attention too."
Those on the Left, of course, like to believe that "liberalism" and "humanism" are incapable of such vendettas; that they are indisposed ideologically to producing the kind of terror that religion can produce. That's the common fantasy of the Left.
THEY'RE WRONG, HOWEVER! There was, to be sure, the INQUISITION under Torquemada in Spain that was produced by religious intolerance; but there was also the TERROR under Robespierre in France that was motivated by a "humanism" gone utterly mad.

| Liberals and humanists like to believe that it is only the religious that are capable of torture; but, of course, that's not true, for while the religious have had their Torquemadas, the humanists have had their Robespierres. |
McQuaid elaborated on the drip-by-drip way the Left was planning to "unveil" evidence against the Right concerning the "war crimes" of the Bush Administration:
"The issue will simmer until Obama and his appointees in the justice department may come to see some sort of a legal reckoning, rather than indefinite postponement, as the only politically 'viable' way forward." [THIS, OF COURSE, IS EXACTLY WHAT THE "WATERGATE TWO-STEP" IS DESIGNED TO ACCOMPLISH.]

Redacted top secret torture memo |
"Obama is effectively putting the ball in Holder's court."
As things stand now, the Left thinks it can win this blood-feud if they can survive the brutal machinations of the Right (for example, a military coup): Not only do they command super majorities in the House and the Senate as well as the presidency, but they believe that history and progress are on their side. The Left believes Western society is moving irrevocably towards a secular-humanist mindset where diversity is honored and religious conviction is viewed as "old-fashioned" and quaint - even dangerous; where nationality and patriotism are frowned upon, and universalism is advanced; where homosexuality is not only tolerated, but celebrated; where abortion is viewed as nothing more than a simple medical procedure; where guns are forever banished; socialism becomes the economic model for the world.

AND MAKE NO MISTAKE ABOUT IT, THAT IS EXACTLY THE KIND OF WORLD TOWARDS WHICH - IF NOT ALL MEMBERS OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY ARE PUSHING - AT LEAST THOSE ELEMENTS THAT ARE DIRECTLY ASSOCIATED WITH THE "SOROS MATRIX" (see below). In short, it's the world of Aldous Huxley's Brave New World.
IT'S
ALSO THE WORLD ...It's also the world that Voltaire, Turgot, Condorcet, Diderot, d'Alembert and the other luminaries of the "French Enlightenment" tried to push on the world as a result of the French Revolution; A WORLD THAT THE GREAT MAJORITY OF FRENCH MEN AND WOMEN - ONCE THEY CAUGHT A REAL GLIMPSE OF IT - DREW BACK FROM IN FEAR; A WORLD THAT THEN HAD TO IMPOSE ITS WILL ON THE FRENCH NATION THROUGH "THE TERROR" AND BY EXPUNGING ALL ELEMENTS OF THE Ancien Régime - THE VERY THING THAT TODAY'S RIGHT FEARS.
The Right remembers what happened to the Russian and French aristocracies; they remember what the Spartacists did to them in Berlin, what Bela Kuhn did to them in Hungary, and what Kurt Eisner did to them in Munich; in all these experiments with Huxley's Brave New World, they were hunted down and murdered.

| Angela Davis on the steps of Sproul Hall at the University of California, 1960s. |
The NLG is a radical/left-wing bar association in the United States that claims to be "dedicated to the need for basic and progressive change in the structure of our political and economic system" - meaning changes that will remake society over in a "secular-humanist" mold.
Its members include lawyers, law students, paralegals, legal secretaries, "jailhouse lawyers", and other legal workers. It was founded in 1937 as an alternative to the American Bar Association and has several local chapters across the country.
And just how radical the NLG is, is attested to by the fact it took a leading role in defending '60s radical Angela Davis - one of Left's great heroines - who in 1974 was arrested as a suspected conspirator in the abortive attempt to free George Jackson from a courtroom in Marin County, California on August 7, 1970. The guns used were registered in her name. She was eventually acquitted of all charges, but was briefly on the FBI's most-wanted list as she fled from arrest. Davis was also associated with the Black Panthers and with the black power politics of the late 1960s and early 1970s. She joined the Communist Party when Martin Luther King was assassinated in 1968. She was also very active with SNCC (the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee) led by radical activists Stokley Carmichael and John Lewis, now a U.S. Congressman from Georgia.

| Jackson was convicted of armed robbery, a felony, for robbing a gas station at gunpoint and at age 18 was sentenced to life in prison. While at San Quentin State Prison in 1966, he founded the Black Guerrilla Family, a Marxist prison gang. On 16 January 1970 along with Fleeta Drumgo and John Clutchette he was charged with murdering guard John V. Mills in retaliation for the shooting deaths of three black inmates by officer O.G. Miller from his guard tower; both shooting and retaliation took place inside Soledad Prison. Miller was never convicted of any crime. Incarcerated in the maximum security cellblock at Soledad Prison, Jackson and the other two inmates became known as the "Soledad Brothers." While in solitary confinement, Jackson wrote two books, Blood in My Eye and Soledad Brother, which became bestsellers and brought him worldwide attention. On August 21, 1971, three days before he was to go on trial, Jackson was shot and killed at the prison. Intellectuals Michel Foucault and Jean Genet have argued that Jackson's death was a "political assassination." |
The NLG has issued a White Paper saying that lawyers in Bush's Department of Justice were "part of a COMMON PLAN to violate U.S. and international laws outlawing torture."
OBVIOUSLY, WHAT THE NLG IS TALKING ABOUT HERE IS A CONSPIRACY INVOLVING THE ENTIRE BUSH MATRIX - which would give Holder carte blanc to go after ALL the Left's political enemies using the nation's RICO laws where participants in the so-called "conspiracy" need only be shown to be peripherally associated with those who were directly involved in the conspiracy to be jailed; that means, everybody and anybody that was in the slightest way connected to John Yoo, Jay Bybee, David Addington, and William Haynes. THIS IS EXACTLY THE KIND OF "NET" THAT BELLA KUHN USED IN HUNGARY TO "KILL OFF" HIS ENEMIES; AND THAT KURT EISNER USED IN MUNICH AND THAT THE SPARTACISTS USED IN BERLIN - TO SAY NOTHING OF WHAT ROBESPIERRE USED DURING THE "TERROR" IN FRANCE AND LENIN USED DURING THE RUSSIAN REVOLUTION.

"Reasonably foreseeable the lawyers' advice would result in great physical and mental harm or death to many detainees; more than 100 have died, many from torture. Torture, like genocide, slavery and wars of aggression, is absolutely prohibited at all times. No country can ever pass a law that would allow them."
Professor Philippe Sands, a British international litigator and author of the new book, Torture Team, also testified at the congressional hearing. He said that after his extensive interviews with many Bush officials, including John Yoo -
"It became clear to me that the Administration has spun a narrative that is false, claiming that the impetus for the new interrogation techniques came from the bottom-up. That is not true; the abuse was a result of pressure and actions driven from the highest levels of government."
Cohen also claims to be privy to evidence that Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, George Tenet, and John Ashcroft met in the White House and personally oversaw and approved the torture by authorizing specific torture techniques including waterboarding. She claims that her evidence also shows that President Bush knew and approved of their actions.
Cohen went on to say:
"They are all liable under the War Crimes Act and the Torture Statute ... Under the doctrine of command responsibility, commanders, all the way up the chain of command to the commander-in-chief, are liable for war crimes if they knew or should have known their subordinates would commit them, and they did nothing to stop or prevent it. The Bush officials ordered the torture after seeking legal cover from their lawyers."

THAT'S VERY DANGEROUS STUFF - attacking the CIA like that; both JFK and RFK tried to do that, and both ended up dead. Still, Fertik and his cohorts believes it's something they have to chance; that they have to finish off the Right while the "stars are favorable to them." If they don't, they have little doubt the Right will come after them with a vengeance.
In addition to going after the CIA, Fertik is also hell-bent on targeting the Right's neo-conservative wing which he blames for much of the foreign policy and economic "debacles" of the last ten years, to include such leading neo-cons as Scooter Libby, Cathie Martin, Paul Wolfowitz, Laurie Mylorie, Frank Gaffney, Michael Ladeen, Doug Feith, Stephen Cambone and David Wurmser. Other neo-cons that are being targeted are Elliott Abrams, and Richard Perle. All of these people are members of the Project for the New American Century (PNAC) - a hotbed of right-wing activity that brings together members of (1) the Political Right, (2) the Religious Right, and (3) the conservative Jewish community in both Israel and the United States. The attack against PNAC - if it comes - cannot help but open up a front of attack against the Religious Right. Why? - Because the Religious Right is so intimately connected to PNAC. [Please see our article, "Making Merchandise out of the People of God" and "The Horror of John Dimitri Negroponte."]
So intertwined is PNAC with such Religious Right organizations as the Institute for Religion and Democracy, the Committee for the Free World, Prodemca, and - most especially - the Council on National Policy, that it is impossible to attack PNAC without attacking these so-called Christian institutions and, ipso facto, the Religious Right. With the appointment of Holder to act as Obama's Robespierre (i.e., his Attorney General), the list of those Democrats in Congress who are climbing "on board" to "GO ALL THE WAY" in prosecuting members of the former Bush Administration is growing exponentially; the list now includes Jan Schakowsky, Hank Johnson, Keith Ellison, Lynn Woolsey, Barbara Lee, Albert Wynn, William Lacy Clay, Dennis Kucinich, Yvette Clarke, Jim McDermott, Jim Moran, Bob Filner, Sam Farr, Robert Brady, Donald Payne, Jay Inslee, Xavier Becerra, Michael Arcuri.

Indeed, the impetus in the Democratic congressional caucus is becoming irresistible.
At
the very center of the effort to push the country in the direction
of prosecuting Bush and his cronies on the Right for war crimes
is George Soros, who has said that destroying Bush and his right-wing
allies is the -
"... CENTRAL FOCUS OF MY LIFE ... A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH."
Obviously, Soros has no doubt what will happen to him and others like him if the Left fails in its effort to destroy the Right.

"HE HATES GOD AND BIBLICAL PRINCIPLES, HE HATES EVERYTHING THAT'S GODLY. He's jumping up and down at the thought that same-sex marriages could happen in this country. It's a direct assault on the church, the institutions that restrain and restrict our behavior and remind us of the standard of morality and moral absolutes."

A New York hedge fund manager, Soros has amassed a personal fortune estimated in the billions and billions. His management company controls billions more in investor assets.
Since 1979, his foundation network -- the flagship of which is the Open Society Institute (OSI) -- has dispensed an estimated $5 billion to a multitude of organizations whose objectives are consistent with those of Soros. According to Richard Poe, co-author with David Horowitz of the 2006 book The Shadow Party -- by which Poe means the matrix of foundations and institutions Soros has built centering around the "Open Society Institute" and including "Democracy Alliance," "Moveon.org," the "Center for American Progress," the "Tides Foundation," and "Media Matters" -- says:
"The Shadow Party is the real power driving the Democrat machine. It is a network of radicals dedicated to transforming our constitutional republic into a socialist hive. The leader of these radicals is ... George Soros. He has essentially privatized the Democratic Party, bringing it under his personal control."

"The Shadow Party [i.e., the 'Soros Matrix'] is the instrument through which he exerts that control ... It works by siphoning off hundreds of millions of dollars in campaign contributions that would have gone to the Democratic Party in normal times, and putting those contributions at the personal disposal of Mr. Soros. He then uses that money to buy influence and loyalty where he sees fit. [The 'Soros Matrix'] ... acts as a mirror image of the Party. It performs all the functions we would normally expect the real Democratic Party to perform, such as shaping the Party platform, fielding candidates, running campaigns, and so forth. However, it performs these functions under the private supervision of Mr. Soros and his associates ... By controlling the Democrat purse strings, the ... ['Soros Matrix'] can make or break any Democrat candidate by deciding whether or not to fund him ... prompting one of its operatives, MoveOn PAC director Eli Pariser, to declare, 'Now it's our party. We bought it, we own it ...'"
Poe elaborates on the "Soros Matrix:"
"In a November 11, 2003 interview with Laura Blumenfeld of the Washington Post, Soros described how he had jump-started the Shadow Party during the summer of 2002 by summoning a team of political strategists, activists, and Democrat donors to his Southampton beach house in Long Island. The attendees included: Morton H. Halperin (Director of Soros' Open Society Institute); John Podesta (Democrat strategist and former Bill Clinton chief of staff); Jeremy Rosner (Democrat strategist and pollster, and ex-foreign policy speechwriter for Bill Clinton); Robert Boorstin (Democrat strategist and pollster); Carl Pope (America Coming Together co-founder, Democrat strategist, and Sierra Club Executive Director); Steve Rosenthal (Labor leader, CEO of America Coming Together, and former advisor to Clinton Labor Secretary Robert Reich); Peter Lewis (major Democrat donor and insurance entrepreneur); Rob Glaser (major Democrat donor and Silicon Valley pioneer); Ellen Malcolm (co-founder and President of America Coming Together and founder of Emily's List); Rob McKay (major Democrat donor); and Lewis and Dorothy Cullman (major Democrat donors)."

"The extent to which American exceptionalism is embedded in the national psyche is awesome to behold.
"While the United States is a country like any other, its citizens no more special than any others on the planet, Americans still react with surprise at the suggestion that their country could be held responsible for something as heinous as a war crime.
"From the massacre of more than 100,000 people in the Philippines to the first nuclear attack ever at Hiroshima to the unprovoked invasion of Baghdad, U.S.-sponsored violence doesn't feel as wrong and worthy of prosecution in internationally sanctioned criminal courts as the gory, blood-soaked atrocities of Congo, Darfur, Rwanda, and most certainly not the Nazis -- most certainly not. Howard Zinn recently described this as our 'inability to think outside the boundaries of nationalism. We are penned in by the arrogant idea that this country is the center of the universe, exceptionally virtuous, admirable, superior'."

| The United Nations where the U.S. is merely one nation among many - which is, according to Soros, as it should be. |
Porter cites Benjamin Ferencz, a former chief prosecutor at the Nuremberg Trials, who believes that those who began the war in Iraq should be brought before an international tribunal and prosecuted for war crimes. Interviewed from his home in New York, Ferencz laid out a simple summary of the case:
"The United Nations charter has a provision which was agreed to by the United States, formulated by the United States in fact, after World War II. It says that from now on, no nation can use armed force without the permission of the U.N. Security Council. They can use force in connection with self-defense, but a country can't use force in anticipation of self-defense. Regarding Iraq, the last Security Council resolution essentially said, 'Look, send the weapons inspectors out to Iraq, have them come back and tell us what they've found -- then we'll figure out what we're going to do. The U.S. was impatient, and decided to invade Iraq -- which was all pre-arranged of course. So, the United States went to war, in violation of the charter."
Porter cites an opinion by Justice Anthony Kennedy in the recent Hamdan v. Rumsfeld case before the Supreme Court that suggested that Bush's attempt to ignore the Geneva Convention in his approved treatment of terror suspects may leave him open to prosecution for war crimes. As Sidney Blumenthal points out, the Court rejected Bush's attempt to ignore Common Article 3, which bans "cruel treatment and torture [and] outrages upon personal dignity, in particular humiliating and degrading treatment."

The Geneva Convention |
"And since Congress enacted the Geneva Convention, making it the law of the United States, any violations that Bush or any other American commits 'are considered war crimes punishable as federal offenses', as Justice Kennedy wrote."
Thus, according to Porter and those who are allied with him in the Soros Matrix, Bush and the neo-cons allied with him are liable for war crimes prosecution for two reasons:
Torture
Starting an unjustified war against -
Iraq.
Other groups and nations under the guise of the "War against Terror."
Now that former U.S. president George W. Bush is an ordinary citizen again, many legal and human rights activists in Europe are demanding - together with Soros - that he and high-ranking members of his government be brought before justice for crimes against humanity committed in the so-called war on terror. Wolfgang Kaleck, general secretary of the European Centre for Human and Constitutional Rights told IPS:
"Judicial clarification of the crimes against international law the former U.S. government committed is one of the most delicate issues that the new U.S. president Barack Obama will have to deal with."
Kaleck goes on to say, however, that if the U.S. courts fail to bring Bush and his minions to justice, European courts will have to. He recommends that arrest warrants be issued for Bush and his subalterns by European courts. Many high-ranking European "internationalists" agree. In an interview with the German public television network ZDF, Austrian human rights lawyer Manfred Nowak, UN special rapporteur on torture, said that numerous cases of torture ordered by U.S. officials and perpetrated by U.S. authorities are well documented.

"We possess all the evidence which proves that the torture methods used in interrogation by the U.S. government were explicitly ordered by former U.S. defence minister Donald Rumsfeld. Obviously, these orders were given with the highest U.S. authorities' knowledge."
Dietmar Herz, professor of political science at the university of Erfurt in Germany, agrees:
"George W. Bush is without doubt responsible for crimes such as torture."
There are, of course, many in the United States who would laugh at the idea of a European court issuing arrest warrants for a former U.S. president or vice president. One wonders how the LILLIPUTIAN nations of Europe - either singly or collectively - would enforce such a warrant. What would they do? - send their LILLIPUTIAN armies and their LILLIPUTIAN navies across the ocean to arrest Bush or Cheney or any of the other neo-cons they might want to haul before their courts? Probably not. But what such arrest warrants would accomplish is to "cage" Bush and his cronies up in the United States, which would be a monstrous humiliation since if they ventured out onto foreign territory, they could be arrested on an "international arrest warrant" and brought to Europe for prosecution.

But in the 1990s, things began to change. "War criminals" in the Yugoslav wars of secession, the Rwanda genocide, and civil wars in countries such as Liberia and Sierra Leone have been captured, judged and convicted.

Now a Spanish court has taken the first steps toward opening a criminal investigation into allegations that six former high-level Bush administration officials violated international law by providing the legal framework to justify the torture of prisoners at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, an official close to the case said.
The case against former Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales and others, was sent to the prosecutor's office for review by Baltasar Garzón, the crusading investigative judge who ordered the arrest of the former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet. The official said that it was "highly probable" that the case would go forward and that it could lead to arrest warrants.
NOTE: For now, the effort by Garzón has been quashed; but should pressure continue to build, and "evidence" continue to mount, Garzón will undoubtedly renew his efforts. Similar efforts are underway in Holland and Denmark.
The move represents a step toward ascertaining the legal accountability of top Bush administration officials for allegations of torture and mistreatment of prisoners in the campaign against terrorism.
NOTE: Spain claims jurisdiction in the case because five citizens or residents of Spain who were prisoners at Guantánamo Bay have said they were tortured there. The five had been indicted in Spain, but their cases were dismissed after the Spanish Supreme Court ruled that evidence obtained under torture was not admissible.
The 98-page complaint, a copy of which was obtained by The New York Times, is based on the Geneva Conventions and the 1984 Convention Against Torture, which is binding on 145 countries, including Spain and the United States. Countries that are party to the torture convention have the authority to investigate torture cases, especially when a citizen has been abused.
There is, however, nothing so better calculated to make Americans angry than being judged by non-Americans - and that's especially true when Americans are judged by what they see as the "limp-wrist" effeminates of Europe (and even such non-European countries as Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and so forth. Americans have a pride in their country that probably no other people on earth possesses. Having an "international court" judge the United States or its leaders for war crimes would be intolerable to most Americans.
One has only to remember the reaction of the great majority of Americans to the anti-Americanism (so-called) of the French during the international debate over America's decision to launch the 2003 invasion of Iraq. The anti-French sentiment which was stirred up in America was "a wonder to behold" - and so much so that on 11 March 2003, the House of Representatives declared that all references to "French fries" and "French toast" on the menus of the restaurants and snack bars run by the House of Representatives be removed. House cafeterias were ordered to rename French fries "freedom fries." Soon, the anti-French sentiment spread throughout the country, even to Knott's Berry Farm in Los Angeles where signs advertising "American" fries popped up. The signs had formerly read "French." This sentiment was communicated through the Internet, chain e-mails, and frequent references on 24-hour news coverage from networks such as CNN and Fox News. Even MSNBC joined in the hoopla against the French.
It's precisely here that one is reminded of the film a Bridge Too Far, a 1977 epic war film based on the 1974 book of the same name by Cornelius Ryan. It was produced by Joseph E. Levine and Richard P. Levine and directed by Richard Attenborough.

The film tells the story of Operation Market-Garden, and its ultimate failure, the Allied attempt to break through German lines and seize several bridges, with the main objective the bridge over the Lower Rhine (Neder Rijn) River, in the occupied Netherlands during World War II. The name for the film comes from a comment made by British Lieutenant-General Frederick A.M. Browning, deputy commander of the First Allied Airborne Army, who told Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, the operation's architect, before the operation,
"I THINK WE MAY BE GOING A BRIDGE TOO FAR."
AND THAT'S PRECISELY WHAT THE LEFT MAY BE DOING IN TEAMING UP WITH THE "SOROS MACHINE" AND, IPSO FACTO, THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY IN ORDER TO "GET BUSH."
Again, the very thought that any of America's leaders - no matter how bad - would ever under any circumstances be hauled before a European court or an international tribunal would be ANATHEMA to Americans, except those on the extreme Left. It reeks of the kind of "internationalism" that conjures up in the American psyche visions of the Antichrist and the Illuminati.

It's PRECISELY the kind of thing that would cause many Americans to agree with the Christian Right: that Obama might just be the Antichrist!

In this connection, the Left would be well advised that insofar as America's War in Iraq was concerned, it was not so much the war itself that bothered most Americans as it was the fact that it wasn't prosecuted with the necessary brutality to make a quick end of it.
And even with regard to the "Torture Memos" and other "evidence" for war crimes against the Bush Administration and the Right, the truth is, the overwhelming majority of Americans thought that at the time (i.e., immediately after the attacks of 9-11) it was appropriate to torture Islamic detainees. And even now, almost a decade after 9-11 - and despite the terrible revelations concerning "renditions," "disappearances" and torture - a new CBS/New York Times poll shows a stunning 62% of Americans don't want a Congressional probe of Bush-era interrogation techniques.
Thus, while the Democratic base may be adamant in their demand for a public witch hunt against the Bush administration, a great many Americans will be wondering why the Obama Administration is treating the mad men behind 9-11 like victims, while attacking the defenders of this nation as if they committed a crime.

And it's not as if we in Antipas have not run afoul of the super-patriotism of most Americans; take one email we recently received from an irate American who had at one time subscribed to our website, but who evidently "repented" of it. She (he?) wrote:
"Remove me from your left wing trash. You are not an American ... Anyone who could blame ... [America] for the ills of this world is from Satanhimself. Your trash should not be allowed in any form. My God repay you for the ills you are doing to this Great Country. Just look at what is happening now. It is the Liberals straight from hell - they are the Gov. and they are the problem now - of which are you. REMOVE ME FROM THE GARBAGE YOU ARE SPEWING."
Pretty heavy stuff! - to which I can only reply with the words of the great Scottish writer, Robert Burns:
"God grant us the ability to see ourselves the way others see us."
AND
GOD GRANT US THE ABILITY TO SEE WHAT WE AS AMERICANS ARE IN
DANGER OF BEING "MORPHED INTO" - NOT SO MUCH BY THE SO-CALLED
"SECULAR-HUMANISM" OF THE LEFT, BUT BY THE "SUPER-PATRIOTISM"
OF THE RIGHT WHICH THE LEFT IS IN GRAVE DANGER OF PROVOKING
- A "SUPER-PATRIOTISM" THAT WILL UNITE ITSELF WITH THE CHURCH
IN OPPOSITION TO THE "SECULAR-HUMANISM" AND "INTERNATIONALISM"
OF THE LEFT.
D.R. McConnell, in his book, A Different Gospel, writes:
"It is a strange curiosity that those Christians who are most adamant that our's is the generation that will see the Lord's return - and the end-time deception and apostasy associated with his return - look for signs of this deception outside the church, in such conspiracies as the New Age movement, and in such cults as Mormonism, the Jehovah's Witnesses, and Christian Science.
"Admittedly, these movements pose potential threats to the church, BUT PERHAPS WE WOULD DO BETTER TO LOOK FOR THE DECEPTION OF THE END-TIMES WHERE JESUS AND THE NEW TESTAMENT PREDICTED IT WOULD OCCUR: WITHIN THE CHURCH, WITHIN GROUPS THAT CALL THEMSELVES 'CHRISTIAN' BUT WHICH ACTUALLY PREACH A DIFFERENT GOSPEL."
